Events: Dialogue Spaces Luncheon Series

Feb. 21, 2008: Dr. Lorraine Blackman

Dialogue Spaces are intended to offer IUPUI translational scholars an opportunity to talk with audiences about their work in an informal setting. It provides a forum for faculty members, students, and community partners with similar interests to dialogue about translating evidence-based research into practices that influence everyday life. If you have questions, please contact Stephan Viehweg at sviehweg@iupui.edu.

Topic: Preventing UNWANTED Pregnancies and Births through Family Life Education [PDF]

Dr. Lorraine Blackman studies the importance of teaching family leaders to socialize children for healthy, productive adult lives. Children born to parents in uncommitted, unstable relationships often suffer negative physical, mental, and economic health. In her teaching students how to translate research into preventive psycho-educational practice with families, she and her students have created a series of prevention and coping tips for parents, adolescents (10 years and up), single parents, and community leaders to address the issue. These include talking to children openly about human sexuality, taking parenting and marriage classes, and teaching adolescents how to prevent unplanned pregnancies.

IUPUI is Indiana's premier urban research university. The campus enrolls more than 30,000 students in 21 schools and academic units.
