Mapping Foreclosures and Reclaiming Neighborhoods: Using GIS and Ethno

Indianapolis' Eastside continues to be ground zero for one of the most pressing issues both in Indianapolis and nationally: that is, very high rates of mortgage foreclosure due to predatory lending. According to the Indianapolis Star, Indianapolis’ foreclosure rate ranks third in the US. Through working with students, neighborhood groups and a graduate research assistant from the Geography Department, we are combining the use of GIS (Geographic Information Science) along with ethnographic methods to create both an interactive map that can be accessed by community residents and practitioners.
