Research that uncovered stock option grant backdating
My research co-authored with Erik Lie uncovered the practice of option grant backdating at many public corporations. It prompted SEC and DOJ investigations, and WSJ reporters following up on it won a Pulitzer prize in 2007 for their investigations (which my co-author and I encouraged and assisted with). Executive compensation disclosure rules were changed as a result of our research. Over 250 companies have been investigated thus far and financial restatements have totalled in the tens of billions of dollars.
