Joan Austin's pioneering work about mental health issues in children with epilepsy provides a foundation suggesting that these children suffer from more mental health problems (depression, behavior problems, attention problems, and social problems) than children without epilepsy. In addition she has shown that families play an important part in child outcomes. Our research team, headed by Dr. Austin, has also shown that as IQ decreases in these children, behavior and mental health problems increase. In addition, my own research has identified specific problems that parents of children with epilepsy and signficiant learning problems report such as problems communication with school and health care professionals. Based on these findings we have developed an intervention designed to help parents address these areas. This study is currently NIH funded.
