Community Partnerships for Improved Health Outcomes

"WESCO Neighborhood Health: A Report to the Community" is the outcome from best practices in participatory action research and service learning in the Near Westside Neighborhood adjacent to the IUPUI campus. The health report card was initiated by the Community Outreach Partnership Center Health Promotion Committee (COPC-HC) during 2004. Indiana University School of Nursing and the Indiana University School of Medicine Department of Public Health faculty and students partnered with the COPC-HC to develop, implement and evaluate a health survey-interview instrument in the WESCO community. Findings from the survey results were used to develop the COPC-HC WESCO-Westside Five Year Health Plan which has been integrated into the 2008 Greater Indianapolis Neighborhood Initiative's Quality of Life Plan for the Near Westside Neighborhood. Health issues identified as top concerns were hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and weight problems.
