Description of the video:
00:03-i'm a chancellor's professor of earth
00:05-sciences in the school of science
00:08-and my project is getting the let out
00:11-community solutions to environmental
00:15-now a lot of people understand that lead
00:18-is a crippling many communities around
00:21-the country and indeed around the world
00:24-lead poisoning comes from the exposure
00:25-of largely children
00:27-to lead in soil or dust or
00:31-even in tap water and those kids once
00:34-exposed are always impacted
00:36-so lead poisoning has a has a long time
00:40-the individuals as well as the
00:42-communities that host those individuals
00:44-because those those kids will grow out
00:46-to be young adults who will have
00:47-learning difficulties and usually poor
00:49-educational outcomes
00:50-and other behavioral issues so lead
00:54-poisoning has become a big focus
00:55-of a lot of community conversations but
00:58-unfortunately we know very little about
00:59-where the sources have led all are in
01:02-beyond generalizations so my project
01:05-involves a very tight partnership with a
01:08-couple of local groups here in
01:10-indianapolis to help train the next
01:14-budding environmental health scientists
01:18-actually go out in communities talk to
01:21-sample homes and soils and empty lots
01:25-and return the samples to our lab where
01:27-we basically simply provide a technical
01:30-service as well as training for that for
01:33-some of the things we've seen have been
01:34-pretty incredible so
01:36-the youth gain agency in their own
01:38-community and confidence obviously from
01:41-learning the science but also learning
01:42-how to translate that science
01:44-but probably more importantly is that
01:48-us the researchers with new techniques
01:52-more effective research translation and
01:54-more effective community engagement to
01:57-and they've also provided some solutions
01:59-that we couldn't have
02:01-derived ourselves i'll just provide one
02:05-is when the youth heard me talking about
02:08-concerns i have about unlicensed
02:10-daycares being big exposure risks for
02:13-communities they went to these daycares
02:17-and rather than saying
02:18-hey we want to test your soil knowing
02:21-that they're unlicensed for a reason
02:23-and and they wouldn't be open to that
02:26-hey if if we brought a bunch of
02:30-landscaping material could we landscape
02:33-and they of course all said yes and so
02:36-what the students did is without
02:38-necessarily even knowing the conditions
02:40-they uh they contracted for a free
02:44-and planting materials and they mulch
02:47-all of these playgrounds and landscape
02:50-them and when you do that you actually
02:54-layer the lead soil from kids exposures
02:57-in the first place so
02:58-whether the problem was there or not to
03:00-start with is definitely gone afterwards
03:02-so really creative ways i've learned
03:06-that engaging youth in in community
03:09-uh appropriate reactions can be really
03:13-so as you can see the translation has
03:15-actually gone both ways for me
