Implementing an Animated Geographic Information System to Investigate
The objectives of this work are to develop new methods for application of GIS technologies to investigate factors associated with nosocomial transmission of resistant organisms. GIS-generated animations demonstrated inappropriate patient placement for 19% of patients with methicillin-resistant Staphyloccocus aureus and insufficient time for hand hygiene in 6,248 healthcare provider-patient contacts. When results of this research were brought to the attention of infection control practitioners, visualizations were used to educate staff and change aspects of the core practice of checking patient vital signs. A manuscript describing this work has been published in "The American Journal of Infection Control".
