Community Archaeology
The archaeology and community heritage project I have directed since 1999 focuses on life along and across the color line, and it has used the Ransom Place neighborhood, Indiana Avenue, and the IUPUI campus itself to probe the relationship between race and the material world. The project produces community histories based on archaeological excavation as well as oral historical testimony, documentary research, and ethnography with community constituencies. Excavations at seven sites in the near-Westside have recovered well over 100,000 objects discarded by families living in the neighborhood over a century-and-a-half. Campus collaborations on the project have involved work with colleagues in History, Geography, and Museum Studies as well as administrators and staff across the campus.
