Employing Distance Learning Technologies
I am involved in research on distance learning based on practical experience in this domain going back to 1993. Beginning with instructional television over the Iowa Communications Network (over 750 full-motion, interactive television classrooms across the state), continuing at IUPUI with the online Masters of Science in Music Technology degree in 2000 using live videostreaming, and exploiting Internet2 resources with colleagues and students internationally, I have literally built up degree programs that would otherwise not have been sustainable. They exploit the ever-improving media and informational resources of the Internet that rival on-campus instruction. In the process of engaging in the distance learning experience, I have had to adopt or create new teaching and learning techniques that would not have been precipitated by traditional classroom instruction.
