Whose History Matters? Thinking about Collaboration and Open Access
|
|
While many people believe that Native cultural heritage is held geographically close to the Indigenous communities they were extracted from, the reality is that materials are often held in cultural heritage institutions far away from the originating communities. You can find Indigenous holdings around the globe; often, those institutions have little if any contact with the Indigenous communities that those collections are about. Part of Dr. Guiliano's scholarship includes raising awareness about these holdings and the ethical question “owning” these collections introduce. The other part of her research includes working with cultural heritage institutions to develop narratives around their own local histories. Join us to see examples of how local histories can inform contemporary practices around data, access, and collaboration.

TRIP Scholar Receives Patent for Innovation that Utilizes Peptides for the Treatment of Neurodegenerative Diseases
|
|
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a patent for utilizing peptides in treating neurodegenerative diseases to TRIP Scholar and IU School of Dentistry Associate Professor Mythily Srinivasan. Dr. Srinivasan developed peptide analogs of a p65 interacting protein that helps suppress inflammation and degeneration for neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and multiple sclerosis.

TRIP Scholar Receives Patent for Method That Treats Salts and Water Balance Diseases
|
|
The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued a patent for a method created by TRIP Scholar and IUPUI School of Science Professor Bonnie Blazer-Yost. The method utilizes SGK1 inhibitors that reduce sodium reabsorption in the blood, thus reducing the development of diseases related to salt and water balance, particularly for hydrocephalus and hypertension. This annual award from the Indianapolis campus's vice chancellor for research recognizes associate professors in the first three years of their academic appointment who have made exceptional contributions to research in their field. TRIP Scholar Receives Grant

Congratulations to TRIP Scholar Dr. Mark Kelley. He received a $466,315 grant from the National Cancer Institute to study "Metabolic flux analysis and PDX models to understand therapeutic vulnerabilities following inhibition of Ref-1 redox signaling in pancreatic cancer."

TRIP Scholar Receives Research Grants
|
|
Congratulations to TRIP Scholar Dr. Tamika Zapolski. She received a $15,416 grant from Boston University to study "Addressing alcohol use related health disparities: A hybrid-effectiveness implementation study of a culturally adapted MI for Latinx alcohol and drug users." She also received a $1,950 grant from the University of Michigan to study "CBPR: Extending the Use of Innovative Methodologies in the Behavioral & Social Sciences (Mental Health and Burnout Programming for High School Teachers)."

You are invited to attend the 15th annual IUPUI Last Lecture on Friday, November 3, 2023, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the IUPUI Campus Center Theater, Room CE 002 (lower level). The program begins at 2 p.m., followed by a reception where you can mingle.
The 2023 Last Lecturer is Dr. Peggy Daniels Lee, who retired in June, 2020 as clinical professor of operations management and faculty chair of undergraduate programs at the Indiana University Kelley School of Business, Indianapolis. Dr. Lee’s Last Lecture, titled From Secretary to Professor, will introduce you to the people she has encountered along her life’s journey from her first post-college job as a secretary to becoming a clinical emeritus professor. She will share what she’s learned from them - perseverance, the ability to embrace delayed gratification, how to be a good person, and how to exist as a human being on this earth. Over the years, she has developed a way of being that guides her professional and personal lives.
The Last Lecture is sponsored by the Senior Academy, the Office of Academic Affairs, and the Indiana University Foundation.

OnyxFest will present five never-produced one-act plays at this year’s festival. Sponsored by the Africana Repertory Theatre of IUPUI (A.R.T.I.) in conjunction with IndyFringe, OnyxFest 2023 is scheduled for November 3 – 5 and November 10 – 12. Plays will be staged at the IndyFringe Basile Theatre and the Crispus Attucks High School Auditorium.

Volunteers assist with setting up meal distribution sites, bagging meals, directing traffic, distributing community resources, loading food boxes and uplifting the community. Two shifts available: Packing from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m., and distribution from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Light refreshments are provided for breakfast and a boxed lunch for the 9:30 am- 12:30 pm volunteers. Warm beverages and bottled water are available throughout the day.

The LASER PULSE collaboration has produced a collection of tools to aid researchers in planning for and conducting research translation. The collection includes planning and strategy tools for research translation implementation, stakeholder analysis, communication, and dissemination; guidance on specific approaches to research translation related to policy change, community engagement, nudges, and effective storytelling; and guidance on creating briefs and other written communications to facilitate research translation.

How to store or share restricted or critical data at IU
|
|
Storing data correctly is the key to keeping it safe. Storage owners must use the Institutional Storage Request Form if storing or sharing restricted or critical data. IU’s University Information Policy Office also reminds you that individually owned storage spaces such as Google at IU My Drive and Microsoft OneDrive at IU are never an appropriate place to share institutional data.

Download Statistical Analysis Software At No Charge
|
|
A reminder that IU faculty, staff, and students can install statistical, mathematical, and qualitative analysis software packages such as SPSS and Stata for no additional cost. Since this UITS initiative began in July 2022, the number of downloads is three times higher than it was in the prior year, with around 3,000 students, faculty, and staff taking advantage of access to the software.

IU Center for Survey Research Capabilities and Expertise
|
|
The IU Center for Survey Research has capabilities from traditional survey design and data collection (using web, mail, telephone, in-person) to qualitative interviews to specimen collection. They provide up to 2 hours of free consultation to any IU faculty, staff, or student and then charge based on hourly rates determined by the university. During the academic year, they offer free weekly consulting at two locations on the Bloomington campus (Tuesdays from 10-12 and Wednesdays from 12-1:30) but are happy to meet by Zoom for people in Indy.

The IU Presidential Arts and Humanities program provides funding in support of research and creative activity through a variety of mechanisms, including a Fellows Program as well as travel and production grants. The Indiana Statistical Consulting Center supports IU faculty, staff and graduate students by helping with the planning phase, writing the methodological portion of grant proposals, carrying out the proposed analysis and writing up results once the grant is funded. Collaborators will meet free of charge with the agreement that their efforts will be compensated by the grant if funded.
